over fachjan

A Green Family Business

The Third Generation Janssen

Today, Fachjan is led by the third generation of the Janssen family, who are advancing the family business with a contemporary vision and entrepreneurship. In an era where innovation, sustainability, and international growth are indispensable, the management combines the best of both worlds: the family values of the past and the professional ambitions of today.

Under the leadership of Paul Janssen and Fred Janssen (third generation), Fachjan has experienced significant growth in recent years and has been professionally positioned in the international market for tropical and subtropical plants.

Company History

A Family with Green Thumbs

1941

The Green Roots

Kees Janssen starts his horticultural activities on 1.8 hectares at Strijplaan in Honselersdijk, growing grapes and a variety of vegetables.

1962

The Birth of Fachjan

The business is thriving, leading to the acquisition of a second location on Strijplaan. The total growing area expands to 3.5 hectares, and the range is extended to include flower cultivation.

1973

A New Generation Grows

The second generation joins the business, with sons Kees, Koos, Jos, and Wim each assuming their own responsibilities within the family company.

1976-1984

Sustainable Breakthrough

In 1976, a third location is acquired in Honselersdijk, this time on Harteveldlaan, at the border with Kwintsheul.

Not only does the Janssen family’s horticultural business grow rapidly. Around the 1980s, the two locations on Strijplaan are sold to the also rapidly expanding flower auction. At the same time, the cultivated area on Harteveldlaan is expanded by one hectare to a total of 2.7 hectares.

1983-1986

Growth in Westland

Kees Janssen steps back, and the second generation takes over the leadership. The company is renamed to Gebr. Janssen.

As this turns out to be a common name in the Westland, it often leads to confusion. In 1986, the decision is made to rename the company Fachjan, a name derived from Firma C.H. Janssen.

1998

Stronger Through Acquisition

Demand for (large) tropical plants rises sharply in the 1990s. A new greenhouse, reaching an impressive 16 meters in height, is built on Harteveldlaan. Together with the existing wide-span greenhouse, this brings the total covered area to 3.7 hectares.

2003

Green Entrepreneurship Worldwide

Fred and Paul, sons of Kees, join the management of Fachjan as the third generation. During these years, the company increasingly focuses on the import of tropical plants.

2011

Fred and Paul take full control as the second generation hands over the reins of the company.

2012

To keep up with the growing demand for green plants, the old wide-span greenhouse is replaced with a state-of-the-art Venlo-style greenhouse. The total cultivated area expands to 4.5 hectares.

2016

Together with six fellow growers, Aardwarmte Vogelaer is established. A geothermal well is drilled collectively, with the heat set to be used for greenhouse heating starting in 2017.

2017

Demand for imported plants continues to rise, leading to the acquisition of a second location in Naaldwijk. This site is primarily used for the cultivation of imported ficus plants.

2019

Fachjan acquires a third location, this time in ‘s-Gravenzande. The 3.6-hectare greenhouse on Nieuwelaan is set up for the complete cultivation process, from cutting to finished product.

2021-2022

The Naaldwijk site is sold and replaced by a new location in Honselersdijk. Fachjan also takes over the greenhouse and plant assortment of Gerrit Stolze Kentia in De Lier, bringing the total area across the four locations to around 10 hectares.

2026

Fachjan expands its main location on Harteveldlaan in Honselersdijk by acquiring neighboring BK-Plant. This greenhouse is scheduled to become operational on July 1, 2026.
