Fachjan is one of seven partners in Aardwarmte Vogelaer B.V. Following an extensive preparation phase, two wells were drilled to a depth of over 2,400 meters in Poeldijk in spring 2016. Since March 2017, Fachjan has been using the geothermal network for its operations.
Since 2017, Fachjan has measured its corporate footprint every year. The results help us identify the areas where our sustainability efforts can have the greatest impact.
At the main location in Honselersdijk, 270 solar panels have been installed on the roof of the shed and the quarantine areas.
This marks the next step in the company’s sustainability efforts. The solar panels generate the majority of the electricity used.
After acquiring the ‘s-Gravenzande site, a second screen was quickly installed. This enables more efficient sun shading in the summer and helps save substantial energy in the winter due to its double insulating effect.
Fachjan has installed 600 solar panels on the shed roof at its ‘s-Gravenzande site. Thanks to these panels, the location now generates the majority of its daily electricity requirements.
During 2021 and 2022, humidification systems were implemented at our two largest sites. They help maintain cooler, more humid conditions in the summer and support biological pest control by establish healthy populations.
Since August 1, 2023, all Sansevierias sold by Fachjan are grown in 100% peat-free potting soil.
Starting in 2024, this will be extended to all products fully grown in the Netherlands, meaning that the vast majority of our plants will be grown in peat-free substrate.
In 2023, Fachjan signed an agreement to receive geothermal energy at its ‘s-Gravenzande site. The supply is expected to commence sometime in 2026.
Starting in spring 2026, Fachjan’s first electric truck will be making its debut on Dutch roads!
Our work is acknowledged by a range of certifications and quality labels, reflecting our dedication to excellence, people, and the environment.
Since 2017, we have been connected to Aardwarmte Vogelaer B.V. A geothermal project in the Westland that provides sustainable geothermal energy. Thanks to this connection, we heat our greenhouses largely without natural gas, which has drastically reduced our CO₂ emissions.
This certification shows that our cultivation processes comply with international standards for food safety, traceability, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility. It’s a clear testament to our commitment to responsible and transparent production — from greenhouse to customer.
The GLOBAL G.A.P. Risk Assessment on Social Practice (GRASP) is an add-on that helps evaluate the health, safety, and well-being of employees at the farm or company level. It focuses on four main areas of social responsibility: employee participation, awareness of human and labor rights, monitoring indicators for these rights, and the protection of children and young workers.
MPS-ABC is more than a certification — it’s a monitoring tool that helps us take targeted action to reduce our environmental impact. By recording our resource use, we can measure Fachjan’s sustainability performance, promote more conscious consumption, and use the insights to make our operations even greener.
Good working conditions matter to both traders and consumers. The MPS-Socially Qualified (SQ) certification shows that Fachjan complies with national and international standards for health and safety.
Through our collaboration with EAZA, we supply plants to zoos and botanical gardens throughout Europe. This way, we contribute to nature conservation, education, and awareness about biodiversity — literally: green that inspires.
Water is the source of all life. With EWA, we are committed to efficient water use and reuse within our cultivation. Our installations are designed to prevent waste and close cycles.
At Fachjan, sustainability is not a project, but a path we have been following for years.
Thanks to the switch to geothermal energy, modern climate control systems, and energy-efficient installations, we have been reducing our footprint for years.
Additionally, we actively focus on:
We believe that real progress only occurs when we work together — with our customers, partners, and employees. Every plant that leaves Fachjan carries a piece of that mission: making the world greener, healthier, and more beautiful.
